We’re seated at a long, beautiful outdoor table for lunch, and I still can’t imagine why Leo brought us along. And considering how Donovan is sitting back with his arms crossed, and hiding in his hoodie, I’m sure Leo’s regretting his decision.

More and more food is brought to the table—fruits, grapes of course, cheeses, pasta dishes, figs and prosciutto and our plates are piled high.

Wine is poured into glasses and when a woman wearing a white shirt and black tie stands next to Donovan to pour his wine, I immediately sit forward. “Oh he’s not—”

“Reese.” Again Leo shakes his head.

It’s starting to annoy me. I mean, really, which one of us has been raising this kid all this time, and why would I hand over the reins now?

“It’s Italy. Everyone drinks wine from the time they’re six.”

Sighing, I sit back. “Fine.” Pick your battles, Reese.

Donovan raises his eyebrows and looks at Leo. For one minute, he almost smiles, but then his face scrunches up, and he scowls again.

As Giorgio and his wife join us at the table, I spy a young woman, maybe eighteen-years-old, with curly blonde hair and giant breasts, make her way to the table. Seeing Leo, her face lights up, but catching a glimpse of me, she looks devastated. So that’s the reason I’m here. Leo DeSantis may be a tough guy, but he doesn’t want to have to say no to a girl crushing on him. That would hurt her too much. Pretending to be involved with someone already is the easier and kinder way out.

Huh.

She wears her heartbreak on her face. Poor girl. I wish I could tell her she can have him.

And she can have my brother too, while she’s at it. Especially since he’s finished off that one glass of wine and is lecherously starting at her breasts, while she pours him more.

When she sits down, I lean across the table and whisper to Donovan, “Cool it. Do not get drunk, or I will skin you alive.”

Raising his glass he toasts me and whispers back, “I guess now that you’re hanging with Leo DeSantis you can actually make good on that promise, hey, Aunt Reese?” Sitting back smugly, he takes another giant swallow of his wine.

And there’s nothing I can do but the same.
